Has anyone else had a run in with Malware?
Malware is short for malicious software, a program or file that is designed to specifically damage or disrupt a system, such as a virus, worm, or a Trojan horse.
I had my first run in with it today.
While searching on Google, my computer got really slow. Then all of a sudden a window popped up asking me if I agreed to some "terms of service" for an anti-virus software. My internet connection went down (high-speed), and I wasn't able to do anything.
When I closed out Firefox, my desktop image had changed to a blue screen. In the middle, it had a box that said something like, "You're computer has Spyware."
I was immediately worried. I've heard about this happening. In fact, it happened on my brother's computer a week or two ago. He had a hard time getting rid of it. In fact, it happened again last night.
I ran my program for Spyware. I deleted what showed up, but it didn't help. I wasn't able to surf the web or do anything! When I tried to surf the web, it would just open up windows asking me to buy an anti-spyware program.
After doing this again in safe mode, with the same results, I knew that I was in trouble. The only way I could access any website was to do a Google search, and click on the "cached" page.
I called my brother to find out what program he used to get rid of this. A regular Spyware program will not touch it. He told me to get Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware program. You can download this immediately from the internet. I used Download.com to get it. If you find that you need this, just do a Google search for it. The program is free.
To get it though, I kept having to go through cached pages. It was difficult. I downloaded it several times from Download.com. The first few times I tried to run it after saving, I received an error message that said, "System files are corrupt." I kept deleting the old ones I downloaded, and redownloading it. Finally, I was able to get the program installed.
I scanned my computer, and it took about an hour and a half. After deleting the files found, I restarted the computer. The blue screen was still there, but the box in the middle with text was gone. I changed my screensaver, and I was able to search again.
The interesting thing about this is it happened while I was working for ChaCha. I don't believe it happened because of anything to do with them specifically, but I do believe I surfed onto a site that transferred this to my computer. The bad thing is, you can't be 100% sure it's completely wiped off your computer.
If you start having problems where you can't connect to the internet, or websites won't load, I would advise getting Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware program installed on your system. It's possible that Malware has got into your system, and believe me it's a lot easier to get install it before it messes with your system.
Tonight, I came across a petition that is being prepared to send to ChaCha. Anyone that works for this company can sign it. It's basically asking ChaCha to do the right and fair thing of paying .20 per search. Really though, guides should be paid more then this.
I see that over time, the rate guides are paid has went down. Before working this job, I anticipated at least making $5 or $6 an hour. As it stands though, on average I make $3 to $4 per hour. I was ok with this pretty much, because hey it's money from home. I'm not ok with being paid only $1 to $2 an hour though.
I'm wondering how many people plan to quit because of this? I know that when I started working for ChaCha, I was told that 10,000 guides worked there. Now, they are saying around $20,000. Did they purposely hire this many people because they knew they were going to be cutting pay and they wanted to take their chances?
This is half of what is wrong with our economy. We have companies that are already rich, trying to make even more off of workers and consumers. A person deserves to be paid an honest sum of money for the work they do. What are these rich companies going to do when American consumers don't have the money to buy their goods or use their services?
But, I am getting off topic.
Anyhow, if you want to at least take some kind of action against the pay cut, click here to view the petition.
If you know (or work) for ChaCha, you've probably already heard about their pay change.
Instead of guides making .20 for each answer, they will now receive a performance pay. The pay will be based on their previous week's work. Many guides will find themselves making only .10 per answer.
According to ChaCha, "Each week, a Guide’s performance is tallied against the Top Guide requirements. Guides who achieve Top Guide status will be paid at $0.20 per answer for the following week (Sunday-Saturday). The balance of Guides will continue to be paid at $0.10 per answer, until the following week when performance is evaluated again."
This is going to hurt a lot of people, especially single moms and others that desperately needed the income. For those of us that average $3.00 to $4.00 an hour, we will find ourselves making $1.50 to $2.00 per hour. Is this right or fair?
I personally am very disappointed and let down about this. Really, .20 isn't a lot. What they should have done was offer a higher pay for the top guides. Instead of .20, they should offer .25 for guides that achieve that status. Maybe even more.
I think a lot of us are going to find it a very interesting next few weeks. I know many guides are going to quit over this. In these uncertain times, we really need a solid income. At least minimum wage. When doing an honest day's work, a person should be paid an honest wage as well.
